Environmental Studies Strengthened in School Curriculum Under NCF 2023

Environmental education is now becoming a stronger part of school learning across India. The National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023 has recommended that environmental education should be included as an inter-disciplinary subject.

Based on this, the school curriculum already includes important environmental topics. These topics are spread across various subjects at all stages of school education.

The aim is to help students become more aware of the environment. It also encourages them to develop habits and values that support a sustainable future.

Environmental Chapters Already in Textbooks

Environmental education is not a new concept in schools. It is already part of many chapters in the existing science textbooks from Class 6 to Class 12.

For example, students in Class 6 learn about the diversity of living things and nature’s treasures. Class 7 includes chapters on forests and wastewater. In Class 8, students read about coal, petroleum, and conservation of plants and animals.

Class 10 has a chapter titled “Our Environment.” Class 12 biology textbooks cover topics like populations, ecosystems, and biodiversity conservation.

NCERT Materials for Students and Teachers

To support teaching and learning, NCERT has also developed extra materials. These include project books for Classes 6 to 10 in Hindi, English, and Urdu.

An activity book called “Water: Every Drop Counts” is available for all stages of school. A special teachers’ handbook for higher secondary education is also available. These materials help in understanding and teaching environmental topics better.

Learning Through Activities and Exhibitions

Every year, the Department of Education in Science and Mathematics (DESM) under NCERT organizes a National Science Exhibition. This exhibition includes themes related to the environment.

Students get to display their models and ideas on topics like waste management, green technology, and conservation of resources.

Along with this, Rashtriya Avishkar Saptah is also held every year. During this event, students perform experiments and activities related to environmental topics.

These include checking the quality of water and soil, planting trees, and learning how to conserve water. These activities help students learn by doing. They also make students more aware of their role in protecting nature.

Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE

The National Education Policy 2020 focuses on environmental awareness and sustainability. It says that students should learn how to take care of nature and understand the impact of climate change. Schools have been using Eco Clubs to achieve this goal.

Now, these Eco Clubs have been renamed as “Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE.” Students take part in activities like saving energy and water, reducing waste, recycling, and promoting healthy lifestyles. These clubs help students become responsible citizens. They also help students share their learning with families and local communities.
