The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced a six-month Certificate Programme on Developing of Social Science Textbooks and Other Curricular Materials. The programme will run from September 2026 to February 2027. The Department of Education in Social Sciences will conduct the programme.
The programme will focus on building professional skills for developing social science textbooks and other curricular materials. NCERT says the programme will train potential social science curricular material developers. It will also help strengthen the quality of curricular materials developed by agencies such as SCERTs and the private sector.

NCERT Social Science Certificate Programme 2026-27
The programme will offer professional training to teachers and teacher educators. It will also support other potential developers of textbooks and curricular materials. NCERT aims to strengthen the capacity of SCERTs and other state and national agencies to develop quality social science curricular materials.
Programme to run in three phases
NCERT will conduct the six-month programme in three phases.

NCERT will offer four courses in the programme. Each course carries five credits. The programme will provide a total of 20 credits.
Four courses will cover key areas of social science education
The first course will focus on School Social Science Education and Building Perspectives. It will cover the status and history of social sciences in schools. It will also examine social sciences and social studies. The course will explore curriculum comparisons across countries along with policy directions and challenges in teaching social sciences.
The second course will focus on Epistemology and Social Sciences. Participants will study knowledge structures and methods in social sciences. The course will cover History. Geography. Economics. Political Science and Sociology.
The third course will cover Development of Curricular Resources and Pedagogic Concerns. Participants will explore textbooks and child context. They will also study the importance of images in textbooks. The course will cover textbook development processes and digital content development. It will also address language and learning resources in social science classrooms.
The fourth course will focus on Learning and Assessment in Social Sciences. It will cover how learning takes place in social sciences. Participants will also study assessment reforms and different forms of assessment. The course will include research on curricular materials such as textbooks. Question papers and answer scripts will also form part of the study.

Participants will complete practical assignments
The programme will include several practical assignments. Participants will write essays and summaries. They will analyse textbooks and other curricular materials. They will also draft textbook chapters and worksheets.
Participants will develop model questions and question papers. They will conduct classroom research in schools. They will also create posters.
NCERT will award certification through portfolio assessment. The assessment will consider participation in the programme. It will also consider assignments. End-of-course examinations and presentations will form part of the assessment.
Interactive teaching will form part of the programme
The course will use interactive approaches. NCERT will provide soft copies of essential course reading materials developed for the programme. Faculty members from the department and other NCERT units will teach the course and work as mentors.
The programme will also include special interactive lectures. Important social science textbook writers from states and professionals who worked with NCERT and other agencies will deliver these lectures.
Who can apply for the programme?
The programme is meant for working social science teachers and teacher educators who have an interest in social science curriculum development. They should also have responsibility in this area at district. state or national level curriculum development agencies.
Candidates should have studied Social Sciences at the graduate or master’s level. Teachers working in schools. colleges and universities should have at least two years of experience in teaching social science courses.
Teacher educators working in DIETs or SCERTs should have at least five years of teaching. research or development experience in the field of Social Sciences.
Selection process and last date to apply
Interested teachers and teacher educators must submit their details through the Google Form mentioned in the circular. NCERT will shortlist candidates based on various criteria. The organisation may conduct online interviews if required.
NCERT will also write to the institutions. DIETs and SCERTs of selected candidates for deputation. Selected participants will need to attend all three phases including the face-to-face phase.
