CBSE’s New Circular Brings Grandparents Back to Classrooms — Here’s Why It Matters
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued new guidelines to encourage inter-generational bonding in schools. The advisory follows recommendations from the National Council of Senior Citizens and guidance from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Under the guidelines, schools are encouraged to involve grandparents in selected school activities. These may include national and commemorative events such as Independence Day, Bal Diwas, and the International Day of Older Persons.

CBSE said the participation of senior citizens can help strengthen emotional connections between generations. The board noted that such interactions may promote mutual understanding, respect, and value-based learning among students.
Schools have also been advised to organise joint activities such as walkathons involving students and their grandparents. These programmes are intended to address issues of loneliness and social isolation faced by many senior citizens.
The circular stresses that all activities should be conducted in an inclusive and dignified manner. Schools may inform relevant authorities in advance, where required, and are expected to maintain proper records of the activities undertaken.
The guidelines take effect immediately and apply to all CBSE-affiliated schools. The board said the initiative aligns with broader efforts to support the well-being and social inclusion of senior citizens through community participation.
