Centre Scraps No Detention Policy for Classes 5 and 8 Students Who Fail Year-End Exams
The Central Government has abolished the No Detention Policy for Classes 5 and 8. This article explains the new rules, re-exam process, and impact on schools. Read on to understand how this policy affects students and education across India.
What Does the New Rule Say?
The Central Government has officially ended the No Detention Policy for students in Classes 5 and 8. According to the new rules, students failing to meet the required promotion criteria will no longer be promoted to the next class. This policy change applies to Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, and Sainik Schools, as well as other schools directly managed by the Central Government.
What Happens If a Student Fails?
As per the gazette notification, students who fail the regular year-end exams will be given an opportunity to:
- Undergo additional instruction within two months of the result declaration.
- Take a re-exam to qualify for promotion.
If students fail the re-exam as well, they will be retained in Class 5 or 8 without being promoted.
Will Students Be Expelled from School?
The government has clarified that no student will be expelled from school until the completion of elementary education. This ensures that students have enough opportunities to meet academic standards without the fear of losing access to education.
How Many Schools Will Be Affected?
This policy will impact over 3,000 schools run by the Central Government, including:
- Kendriya Vidyalayas
- Navodaya Vidyalayas
- Sainik Schools
What About State-Level Decisions?
Since education is a state subject, individual states can decide whether to adopt this policy. So far, 16 states and two Union Territories, including Delhi, have already scrapped the No Detention Policy. However, Haryana and Puducherry are yet to take a decision, while other states have chosen to continue the policy.
This significant change aims to improve the quality of education by encouraging students to achieve academic benchmarks while ensuring they are not deprived of their right to education. NEWS SOURCE – NDTV
