Published On: February 25, 2025
EPFO has extended the UAN activation deadline.

EPFO’s New Rule: Who Will Benefit and Who Might Lose Out?

To avail benefits under EPFO’s Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme, it is mandatory to activate UAN and link the bank account with Aadhaar.

Why Did EPFO Extend the Deadline?

There’s good news for private sector employees and companies. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has extended the deadline to activate the Universal Account Number (UAN) and link the bank account with Aadhaar until 15 March 2025.

The previous deadline was 15 February 2025, but now, with this extension, millions of employees can complete the process without hassle. UAN activation and Aadhaar linking are essential to avail benefits under the ELI scheme.

What is a Universal Account Number (UAN)?

The UAN is a 12-digit unique number assigned to every employee contributing to the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF). It allows employees to manage, transfer, and access their PF account with ease.

Once activated, employees can:

  • Check their PF balance online
  • Download their EPF passbook
  • Apply for withdrawals and advances
  • Update personal details and track claims in real-time

This ensures a seamless experience for EPFO members.

What is the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme?

The ELI scheme is a government initiative to boost employment in the formal sector. Under this scheme, financial incentives are provided to employers and new hires through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

In the 2024 Union Budget, the government introduced three variants of the ELI scheme (A, B, and C). To avail the benefits, employees must activate their UAN and link their bank account with Aadhaar.

What is the New Deadline for Aadhaar Linking?

The Ministry of Labour and Employment, in a circular issued on 21 February 2025, stated that the deadline for UAN activation and Aadhaar linking of bank accounts has been extended until 15 March 2025.

Previously, the deadline was 15 February 2025, but due to high demand, it has now been extended.

If you haven’t linked your Aadhaar to your UAN yet, complete the process as soon as possible to continue enjoying EPFO’s services without interruption.
