First Government-Run Sainik School in the Country Under New Partnership Policy
Chandigarh – The city is set to witness the launch of its first-ever Sainik School, as the Chandigarh Administration has formally submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Defence under the Sainik School Society.
According to official sources, the proposed school will be established at the Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector-23, which sits on a 16-acre campus. The premises will be developed into a model Sainik School, adhering to the norms laid down by the Defence Ministry.
Why is Chandigarh Opening a Sainik School?
The initiative is part of the Centre’s new policy aimed at opening 100 Sainik Schools across India under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The Chandigarh Education Department has already submitted an online application requesting permission to convert the existing government school into a Sainik School.
From Class 6 Onwards – Military Training & Discipline
The proposed school will start from Class 6, with students receiving military-style education emphasising discipline, leadership, and patriotism. A major goal of the initiative is to prepare students for careers in the Indian Armed Forces.
Students will be trained to appear for the All India Sainik School Entrance Examination (AISSEE), conducted annually by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Approval Process Underway
The proposal is currently under review. A committee meeting chaired by Director of School Education, Harsuhinder Pal Singh Brar, has already taken place. Brar confirmed that Chandigarh has officially submitted the application under the Sainik School Partnership Model, marking it as the first government Sainik School proposal in the country under this scheme.
