CBSE invites students aged 9–15 to participate in UPU International Letter Writing Competition 2026
New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a new circular inviting schools to participate in the Universal Postal Union (UPU) 2026 International Letter Writing Competition for Young People, organised by the Department of Posts.
The Universal Postal Union (UPU) 2026 International Letter Writing Competition aims to nurture creativity, critical thinking, and meaningful expression among students while promoting global friendship and understanding.
The circular asks all CBSE-affiliated schools to organise the competition at the school level in coordination with postal authorities and encourage maximum student participation.
A Global Platform for Young Voices
The UPU Letter Writing Competition is a long-running international initiative coordinated by the Universal Postal Union, a United Nations body. For 2026, students are invited to reflect on modern life through the theme:
“Write a letter to a friend about why human connection matters in a digital world.”
CBSE noted that the competition helps students develop originality in thought, clarity in writing, and a deeper understanding of human values in an increasingly digital age.
Who Can Participate
The competition is open to students aged 9 to 15 years. Participants must submit original handwritten letters, and entries must not exceed 800 words. Submissions beyond the word limit will not be considered for evaluation.
Letters can be written in English or any language listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, allowing students to express themselves in their preferred language.

Encouraging Creativity Beyond the Classroom
By promoting participation in this international competition, CBSE aims to extend learning beyond textbooks and examinations. The Board has urged schools to treat the competition as an opportunity to strengthen writing skills, emotional expression, and global awareness among students.
The circular concludes with a call for schools to widely share the information and motivate students to take part, reinforcing the importance of thoughtful communication in a digital world.
