What Are the Key Requirements for Board Examinations?

According to the circular, Class X and Class XII are both two-year programmes. Students must study every subject for two full years to be eligible for examinations. The Board has also made it mandatory for students to have at least 75% attendance to qualify for the board exams.

Why Is Internal Assessment Compulsory?

The circular highlights that internal assessment is a compulsory part of CBSE evaluation under NEP-2020. This is a two-year-long process applicable in all subjects. Without regular attendance, internal assessment cannot be conducted. If internal assessment is incomplete, the student’s result cannot be declared, and such students will be placed in the “Essential Repeat Category”.

What About Additional Subjects in CBSE?

Students are allowed to opt for additional subjects, but with limits. In Class X, students can take two additional subjects beyond the five compulsory subjects. In Class XII, they can take only one additional subject. These additional subjects must also be studied for two years.

The Board has clarified that if a school has not received permission from CBSE to offer a subject, or lacks qualified teachers and laboratory facilities, then students of that school cannot offer such subjects as either main or additional subjects.

Can Compartment or Essential Repeat Students Appear Privately?

Students who had opted for additional subjects earlier and were placed in “Compartment” or “Essential Repeat” category can reappear in those subjects as private candidates. But students who do not meet the eligibility conditions will not be allowed to appear in additional subjects as private candidates.

What Are the Responsibilities of Schools?

The circular reminds schools that only bonafide, regular students of CBSE-affiliated institutions should be registered. Schools cannot register students from unauthorized or unaffiliated institutions.

As per Affiliation Bye-laws (para 14.2), schools must ensure correct student data, proper attendance, and compliance with eligibility rules. The Board also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a teacher–student ratio and a maximum of 40 students per section. Schools must upgrade infrastructure accordingly to meet these requirements.

Why Should Stakeholders Pay Attention?

The Board has made it clear that these rules are non-negotiable. Students, parents, and schools must follow them strictly to avoid problems during examinations. This circular, signed by Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations, is a reminder for all stakeholders to maintain accuracy, attendance, and discipline in academics.
