CBSE Clarifies Marks Calculation Rule for Over-Attempted Questions in Class 12 Answer Sheets

CBSE Clarifies Marks Difference in Class 12 Answer Sheets

Board Explains Why Marks on Scanned Answer Sheets May Differ From Final Results

CBSE has issued an important clarification regarding the marks calculation process for Class 12 students who are reviewing their answer sheets through the verification and re-evaluation process. The board said that some students may notice differences between the marks visible on their evaluated answer sheets and the final marks awarded in the CBSE Class 12 Results 2026.

According to CBSE, such differences usually occur when students attempt more questions than required in sections that contain internal choices. In these cases, the board follows a specific rule while calculating the final score.

Why Are Students Seeing Mark Differences?

After accessing scanned copies of their answer books, many students noticed that the total marks written on the answer sheets appeared different from the final marks reflected in their results. CBSE clarified that the issue is generally linked to over-attempted questions.

In subjects that provide internal choices, students must answer only the prescribed number of questions. However, some students attempt additional questions, which can lead to differences between the marks visible on the answer sheet and the final marks awarded.

What Is CBSE’s Rule for Over-Attempted Questions?

CBSE has clarified that it does not count marks for all answers when a student attempts more questions than required. Instead, the board counts only the highest-scoring answer among the attempted options and excludes the remaining extra responses from the final total.

As a result, students do not receive additional marks for answering extra questions beyond the prescribed limit.

How Does the Rule Work in Practice?

CBSE shared an example to explain the process. If a question contains an internal choice and a student attempts both options, the board includes only the higher score in the final calculation.

For example, if a student scores three marks in one option and two marks in the other, CBSE will count only the three marks. The two marks will not be added to the final total.

What Does the Asterisk (*) Mean on the Answer Sheet?

CBSE marks excluded answers as “Over Attempt” and indicates them with an asterisk (*) on the answer sheet. These marks may appear on the evaluated answer book, but the board does not include them in the final score calculation.

Students should carefully check these markings while reviewing their scanned answer sheets.

What Should Students Do Before Recalculating Their Marks?

CBSE has advised students to carefully review the asterisk markings and footnotes available on their answer sheets before recalculating their totals.

The CBSE board said that understanding the “Over Attempt” marking system will help students correctly interpret their scores and understand how the final marks have been calculated.

Why Is This Clarification Important?

Thousands of Class 12 students are currently reviewing scanned copies of their answer sheets as part of the verification and re-evaluation process. CBSE’s clarification explains why marks shown on evaluated answer sheets may not always match the final score and helps students understand the board’s marks calculation method for over-attempted questions.
