What is the background of this Mathematics subject rule?

According to CBSE’s earlier circular No. Acad-03/2019 dated 10 January 2019, two levels of Mathematics were introduced for the Class 10 board examination. Mathematics Standard (041) was meant for students who wished to continue Mathematics in senior secondary classes. On the other hand, Mathematics Basic (241) was offered to students who did not want to pursue Mathematics at higher levels.

As per those rules, only students who studied Mathematics Standard (041) in Class 10 were eligible to opt for Mathematics (041) in Class 11. Students with Basic Maths were allowed to take only Applied Mathematics at the senior secondary level.

What exemptions were given during earlier sessions?

In earlier academic sessions, CBSE had allowed students with Mathematics Basic (241) to choose Mathematics (041) in Classes 11 and 12. These exemptions were given due to the pandemic and other related circumstances. However, these relaxations were temporary.

What has CBSE decided for the session 2025–26 onward?

CBSE has now decided to extend this relaxation from the academic session 2025–26 onward. This means students who offered Mathematics Basic (241) in Class 10 will be allowed to take Mathematics (041) in Class 11.

However, there is an important condition. Before giving permission, the Head of the Institution or School must make sure that the student has the required aptitude and ability to handle Mathematics (041) at the senior secondary level.

What are the instructions for schools and parents?

CBSE has instructed all schools to inform students and parents in advance so that they can take timely decisions. Once the subject choices are submitted through the List of Candidates (LOC), no changes will be allowed later.

This decision will remain valid only until the new curriculum structure is implemented as per the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE). All other guidelines and conditions mentioned in the original circular No. Acad-03/2019 will continue to remain applicable.
