CBSE will launch Reading Month from July 18 in all affiliated schools with reading pledges, competitions, challenges and free digital storybooks
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to organize a month-long Reading Month in all affiliated schools from July 18, 2026. The initiative aims to develop reading habits among students and encourage the use of digital reading platforms.
CBSE has issued detailed guidelines to schools and asked them to conduct various activities throughout the month. The program will also pay tribute to P.N. Panicker, who is widely known as the Father of the Library Movement in India.

CBSE Launches Reading Month to Build a Reading Culture
CBSE wants students to develop a lifelong habit of reading. The board has directed schools to organize engaging activities that encourage children to read more books and explore digital reading resources. Schools will conduct activities for one month and involve students from different age groups.
Schools to Organize Competitions and Creative Activities
CBSE has advised schools to conduct a variety of competitions during Reading Month. Pre-primary and primary students can participate in drawing and coloring competitions. Older students can take part in quizzes, creative contests, and other reading-related activities. Schools can also organize short plays and cultural activities to make reading more enjoyable and meaningful.
Students Will Take a Reading Pledge in Morning Assembly
Schools have received a special reading pledge from CBSE. During Reading Month, students will take this pledge during their morning assemblies and commit themselves to reading regularly. The board believes that daily encouragement can help students build strong reading habits.
Reading Challenges and Story-Based Activities Planned
Schools will organize essay writing, drawing, storytelling, and reading-based activities to improve students’ language and thinking skills. CBSE has also suggested special Reading Challenges to strengthen comprehension, critical thinking, and analytical abilities. Schools should encourage maximum student participation in these activities.
Digital Reading Platform to Offer Free Storybooks
CBSE has asked schools to introduce students to the StoryWeaver digital platform. Students from Nursery to Class 8 can access attractive stories and reading materials through this platform. The board hopes that interesting digital content will inspire children to read more frequently.
More Than 144 Free Storybooks Available in Hindi and English
Schools will inform students about the availability of more than 144 free storybooks in Hindi and English. These illustrated books are available on the digital platform and students can access them without any cost. Students can create free accounts and explore a wide range of engaging stories designed for different age groups.
Tribute to P.N. Panicker
CBSE has linked the Reading Month celebration with the legacy of P.N. Panicker, who worked tirelessly to promote libraries and reading among people. The board wants schools to continue his vision by encouraging students to read regularly and develop a strong connection with books.
