CBSE gives major relief to Class 12 students by reducing answer sheet viewing fees and revising the revaluation process after concerns over the On-Screen Marking system.
Why did CBSE reduce the revaluation fee?
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has reduced the fee for obtaining scanned copies of evaluated Class 12 answer sheets from ₹700 to ₹100. The Board announced the change after students, parents, and teachers raised concerns about the high fees and issues linked to the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.
CBSE said the revised fee structure will make the review process more affordable and transparent for students.
What changes has CBSE made in the revaluation process?
CBSE has introduced a revised fee structure for post-result services. Students will now pay:
- ₹100 for scanned copies of evaluated answer sheets
- ₹100 for verification of marks
- ₹25 per question for revaluation requests
Earlier, students had to pay:
- ₹700 per subject for scanned answer sheets
- ₹500 for verification requests
- ₹100 per question for revaluation
CBSE also announced that students will receive a full refund of the review fee if their marks increase after revaluation.
How will the CBSE rechecking process work?
CBSE will conduct the rechecking process in two stages.
In the first stage, students must apply online to obtain scanned copies of their evaluated answer sheets.
In the second stage, students can apply for:
- Verification of marks
- Revaluation of answers
Students can use the scanned copies to identify any possible mistakes before applying for revaluation.
When can students apply for scanned answer sheets?
CBSE will start the online application process for scanned copies of answer sheets on May 19, 2026. Students can apply until May 22, 2026.
The Board will begin the verification and revaluation process from May 26, 2026. Students can submit applications for verification and revaluation until May 29, 2026.
CBSE has allowed students only one opportunity to apply for the process.
What happens if marks increase or decrease after revaluation?
CBSE has clarified that revised marks will become final after revaluation.
If marks increase, CBSE will update the student’s marksheet and certificate. If marks decrease, the Board will also apply the reduced marks.
Students must submit their old marksheets and certificates to receive revised documents after the final update.
Why did students raise concerns over the OSM system?
Many students and teachers raised serious concerns about the CBSE On-Screen Marking (OSM) system after the declaration of Class 12 results.
Several students who scored well in JEE Main failed to meet the 75% Class 12 eligibility criteria required for admission into IITs and NITs. This situation increased concerns about possible errors in evaluation.
Teachers also reported multiple technical issues during the evaluation process, including:
- Blurry handwriting after scanning
- Slow server performance
- Scanning errors
- Difficulty reading scanned answer sheets online
These complaints led to demands for greater transparency and affordable rechecking options.
What did CBSE and the Education Ministry say about OSM?
School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar clarified that CBSE did not introduce the OSM system for the first time in 2026. The Board had earlier used the system in 2014, but technical limitations prevented large-scale implementation at that time.

The Education Ministry said evaluators scanned around 98 lakh answer sheets and converted them into PDF files before checking them digitally.
Officials also said the Board used a three-level security system during scanning to ensure:
- No page remained missing
- All pages stayed readable
- Security coding remained accurate
The Ministry confirmed that CBSE did not use Artificial Intelligence (AI) for answer sheet evaluation.
Why did CBSE manually check 13,000 answer sheets?
CBSE manually checked more than 13,000 answer sheets because the scanning system could not properly process them.
Officials said issues like unclear ink, poor handwriting visibility, and scanning limitations prevented evaluators from reading some answer sheets digitally.
The Board shifted these copies to offline manual checking to avoid evaluation errors.
How many students appeared for CBSE Class 12 exams in 2026?

This year:
- 17,80,365 students registered for the exam
- 17,68,968 students appeared
- 15,07,109 students passed
The overall pass percentage stood at 85.20%.
