No More Heavy Bags! Haryana Bans Overloaded Backpacks and Hanging Bottles in Schools
The Haryana government has enforced the School Bag Policy 2020, aiming to reduce the burden on students in both government and private schools. The Education Department has fixed weight limits for school bags and also issued clear instructions about school uniforms and student safety.
Schools to Face Action for Heavy Bags or Hanging Bottles
Under the new policy, if a student is found carrying a school bag heavier than the prescribed weight or a water bottle hanging from their neck, the school will be held accountable. No school can force students to buy uniforms from a specific shop either. If such complaints arise, strict action will be taken against the school management.
Class-Wise Bag Weight Limits That Schools Must Follow
The Education Department has categorised weight limits based on the class of the student:
Class |
Recommended Bag Weight |
---|---|
Class 1st to 2nd |
Not more than 1.5 kg |
Class 3rd to 5th |
Between 2 to 3 kg |
Class 6th to 7th |
Up to 4 kg |
Class 8th to 9th |
Up to 4.5 kg |
Class 10th |
Not more than 5 kg |
Note: These limits have been set as per the School Bag Policy 2020 guidelines issued by the Haryana Education Department.
Why This School Bag Rule Is a Big Relief for Students?
Over the years, it was commonly seen that students carried overloaded bags filled with textbooks, notebooks, and even extra water bottles during summer. The lack of basic school facilities and the pressure to buy private books increased this burden. This not only led to physical discomfort but also triggered health issues such as back pain, poor vision, and frequent headaches in children.
Schools Can’t Force Uniform Shopping from a Single Store
Apart from school bag limits, the policy highlights:
- Schools cannot enforce uniform purchases from a particular vendor
- District Education Officers (DEOs) have been instructed to monitor and ensure compliance
- Any school found violating the policy will face action
The School Bag Policy 2020, though designed five years ago, has finally come into force across Haryana. With this, the state aims to create a healthier and stress-free learning environment for school children.
