NCERT Launches Six-Month Certificate Programme on Social Science Textbook Development

NCERT has announced a six-month certificate programme on developing social science textbooks and curricular materials for eligible teachers and teacher educators.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced a six-month certificate programme on Developing Social Science Textbooks and Other Curricular Materials.

The programme will run from September 2026 to February 2027. It will train working social science teachers and teacher educators in social science curriculum development.

NCERT Certificate Programme for Social Science Curriculum Development

NCERT says the programme will train potential developers of social science curricular materials. It aims to support agencies such as SCERTs and the private sector in improving the quality of curricular materials in India.

The programme will also create professional school curricular material developers. NCERT has included the programme under the Government of India skill development initiative in school education.

Programme Objectives

The programme will provide professional training to teachers and teacher educators. It will also support other potential developers of textbooks and curricular materials in social science.

NCERT will also work to strengthen the capacity of SCERTs and other state and national agencies. The focus will remain on developing quality social science curricular materials.

Programme Duration and Phases

The programme will run for six months. NCERT has divided the programme into three phases.

NCERT will offer four courses under the programme. Each course will carry equal weightage for the award of the certificate.

Course 1: School Social Science Education

The first course carries 5 credits. It will cover the status of social science in schools. It will also examine the evolution and history of social sciences.

The course will explore the difference between social sciences and social studies. It will compare school social science curricula across countries.

Participants will also study policy directions and challenges in teaching school social sciences. The course will include a poster-making workshop on social science and career choice.

Course 2: Epistemology and Social Sciences

The second course carries 5 credits.

It will cover knowledge structures and methods in social sciences. Participants will study methodological issues in History. Geography. Economics. Political Science and Sociology.

Course 3: Development of Curricular Resources and Pedagogic Concerns

The third course carries 5 credits.

Participants will study the meaning of textbooks and their connection with the child’s context. The course will also cover the importance of images in social science textbooks.

Participants will learn about the processes involved in developing social science textbooks. They will also study digital content development and evaluation.

The course will cover language and learning in social science. It will also address teaching-learning resources and the development and production of textbooks and other learning materials.

Course 4: Learning and Assessment in Social Sciences

The fourth course carries 5 credits.

It will cover how learning takes place in social sciences. Participants will examine assessment reforms in India.

The course will also cover assessment in classrooms. Schools and society. It will introduce different forms and tools of assessment in social sciences.

Participants will also research curricular materials. This will include content analysis of textbooks. Question papers and answer scripts.

The four courses carry a total of 20 credits.

Assignments and Certification

Participants will complete different assignments during the programme. These will include essays and summaries. They will also analyse textbooks and other curricular materials.

Participants will draft textbook chapters and worksheets. They will develop model questions and question papers. They will also conduct classroom research in schools and make posters.

NCERT will award certification through portfolio assessment. The assessment will consider participation in the programme. Submission of assignments. End-of-course examinations and presentations.

Teaching and Learning Approach

The programme will use interactive approaches. NCERT will provide soft copies of essential course reading materials developed for the programme.

Faculty members from the department and other NCERT units will teach the courses. They will also work as mentors.

The programme will include special interactive lectures. Social Science textbook writers from states and professionals who have worked with NCERT and other agencies will deliver special lectures.

Who Can Apply

The programme is meant for working social science teachers and teacher educators. Applicants should have an interest in social science curriculum development. They should also have responsibility in this area at district. State or national level curriculum development agencies.

Candidates should have studied Social Sciences at the Graduate or Master’s level.

Teachers working in schools. Colleges and universities should have at least two years of experience in teaching social science courses.

Teacher educators working in DIETs or SCERTs should have at least five years of teaching. research or development experience in Social Sciences.

Selection Process

Interested teachers and teacher educators must share their details through the Google Form mentioned by NCERT.

NCERT will shortlist candidates based on various criteria. It may conduct online interviews when required.

NCERT will write to the candidates’ institutions. DIETs and SCERTs for deputation. Selected participants will attend all three phases including the face-to-face phase.
